If you have just graduated from high school, you and your friends will want to celebrate in the time-honored fashion by attending a schoolies week. (For non-Australians, schoolies week is a tradition of taking a week-long holiday after high school graduation.) The problem is in deciding which destination to choose and that depends on what kind of experience you want as that will affect the type of place you choose.
One of the top schoolies destinations in Australia has to be Queensland’s Gold Coast, with Surfers Paradise being the top location along the coast. That probably doesn’t come as a surprise as there is a fair chance you have spent a holiday or two there in the past either with your parents or your school friends.
So, why is Surfers Paradise so popular? Well, there are the beaches for one thing – white and sandy with crystal blue sea to swim in. The opportunity to barbecue on the beach and party into the night proves a huge attraction. Let’s not also forget the nightlife once you leave the beach with numerous late night venues open including cafes, bars and special schoolies only events.
Then there are the shopping opportunities with so many boutiques selling clothes and shoes of varying designs and prices. Whether you are looking for a bargain or a designer label you will not be disappointed with the choice. Don’t forget that some of the top theme parks in Australia can also be found within a short drive of Surfers Paradise.
Of course, whilst enjoying your schoolies break, you will need somewhere to stay and you will be pleased to hear that there are numerous types of holiday accommodation available. This can range from somewhere like a quality apartment at Surfers Century that caters for large group bookings with a focus on schoolies to a range of hotels and backpackers buildings to suit all budgets. However, you will need to book well in advance as the Gold Coast attracts tens of thousands of schoolies each year.
Although Surfers Paradise is the most popular destination for schoolies, there are other locations that may interest you. For instance, there is the Sunshine Coast, a much quitter location than Surfers Paradise so is likely to appeal to schoolies want something a little more relaxed.
You may also like to consider schoolies destinations at the likes of Byron Bay, Port Macquarie, Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Islands or Magnetic Island in Townsville. Some schoolies also make the slightly longer trip to Bali in Indonesia, as it has a reputation for affordable shopping and it is great for partying.
In Southern Australia the favorite location is Victor Harbor, whilst in Victoria a popular destination is the Surf Coast around Torquay and Lorne.
As a high school graduate, there are many places to choose from for your schoolies adventure. Whatever you are looking for, Australia is sure to have a location to suit!
