With the kids out of school and the weather finally heating up, summer is the perfect time for a family vacation. When deciding on a family-friendly destination, Atlantic City may be the last place that comes to mind. However, while Atlantic City is known first and foremost as a city for gambling, it’s also a great place for families to visit. Here are a few ideas for a fun family vacation in Atlantic City.
See the Historic Sights
Vacations are a great opportunity to show your family historic landmarks that they would not normally get to see and to sneak in a bit of education for your children. Try to visit the following budget-friendly, historic places in Atlantic City.
Tour the Absecon Lighthouse. This lighthouse – just a few blocks from the Atlantic City boardwalk – is the third tallest in the US and the tallest in New Jersey. Climbing this historic lighthouse gives you a unique, panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean. Not only is a trip to the Absecon Lighthouse an opportunity to sightsee, but it also gives you a chance to squeeze some exercise into your trip.
Stop by the Historic Gardner’s Basin. Home to the Atlantic City Aquarium/Ocean Life Center and plenty of other activities such as fishing, cruises, boat rides and unique boutiques, the Historic Gardner’s Basin is another family-friendly attraction that is filled with history and exciting activities.
Hotels and Shopping
Take a break from the heat and head inside to one of the Atlantic City hotels for some family fun and shopping. Some of the most well-known hotels offer things to do specifically for families.
Stop by the Pier Shops at Caesars. This mall on the Atlantic City boardwalk offers luxury retailers for you, and it’s also great for kids. IT’SUGAR is a colorful candy store your kids will love. This specialty shop feels like a playground and has tons of candy options. Also be sure to visit the hourly Water Show in the mall, a colorful show set to lights and music in the mall’s fountain.
Play at Harrah’s Family Fun Center. Located in Harrah’s Resort, the family fun center features a pool, arcade games, prizes, mini golf, shuffleboard, music, and more. This is a must-do for all hotel guests visiting with kids!
Beach and Boardwalk
Even after Hurricane Sandy, the Atlantic City beach and boardwalk are still going strong. Not only is the beach a great way to experience the Jersey shore, but it’s free in Atlantic City! Bring your own activities for a free day of fun in the sun. Your kids will love playing in the sand and water, giving you time to relax. Also be sure to check the entertainment schedules to try to catch one of the many free concerts that are offered on the beach.
Last but not least, stroll down the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. Named the “grandfather of boardwalks” by National Geographic, this historic boardwalk is full of activities for children and adults of all ages. The boardwalk is the hub of Atlantic City, with all the major hotels, shopping and amusement rides.
