Going on vacation should be a time to relax and enjoy time away from the regular routine. It can be stressful however, to worry about eating when you are trying to stick to a healthy or low calorie diet. Being away from home and your normal schedule makes it difficult to locate the kinds of foods you have been trying so hard to eat at home. You don’t want to have to worry about how much weight you’ve gained when it’s time to head back to the real world. The following are ideas to help every vacationer stick to their diet while still enjoying their time away.
People don’t visit a glamorous city or a sandy beach to stay cooped up inside all day. Jog on the beach in the morning and go swimming and canoeing in the afternoon. Your primary means of transportation, whether in the city or the country, should include biking and walking. These increases in physical activity will help to compensate for some of the unhealthy things you will unavoidably end up eating.
If you’re staying with family or friends, offer to do some of the cooking. This is a great way to show your hosts how appreciative you are while managing how many calories go into dinner. If you’re staying at a hotel try to book one that has a kitchenette with a fridge that will allow you to store some healthy treats. Preparing some of the easier dishes that are on your meal plan yourself can go a long way to keeping your diet on track.
A little bit of research before even leaving on vacation will help dieters stay on the straight and narrow. Most restaurants have websites and post menus online. There are also an endless parade of phone apps out there that will allow you to pinpoint acceptable restaurants in the exact area you will be vacationing. Planning ahead where you’ll eat and which options on the menu fit your diet plan will make sticking to good eating habits much easier.
There’s nothing wrong with packing a cooler or a carry-on bag with lots of nutritious snacks. Not only will it be easier to stick with a diet but you’ll save a ton of money. Peanuts, granola bars, and dried fruit are healthy, high energy snacks. Bringing meal replacement shakes along is another great way to get the nutrition you need without loading up on extra calories.
Don’t Deprive Yourself
Remember, this is a vacation. Trying new foods and experimenting with local cuisine is part of a great get-away. Eat a light breakfast and then enjoy one of the meal replacement shakes for lunch. After cutting calories on breakfast and lunch you can have a few more calories for dinner. Another way to enjoy new food without over indulging is to share meals when eating out.
Packing appropriately and planning ahead will make a big difference once the vacation starts. You don’t have to choose between sticking to your diet and enjoying time away.
