The Mediterranean island of Majorca (also spelled Mallorca) is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, but on Majorca Holidays the natural beauty of the Island is often overlooked. Locals tell the story of how after God created Spain, he used the mixture of left over landscapes to create Majorca. The island spans 80km and is a diverse marvel of natural beauty. Mountains to the northwest and southeast, flat inland plains, 550km of coastline and forestry make up Majorca. An impressive 40% of the island is protected, and the Tramuntana mountain range in the north was recently awarded UNESCO world heritage status.
With car hire fairly pricey, and not very environmentally friendly, the best way to explore the impressive Majorcan landscape is on two wheels. Whether that be by bicycle, scooter, or the futuristic Segway…
Bicycle
The mountains and hills of northern Majorca are a renowned training base for international professional cycle teams. In fact this month British pro-cyclists Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins joined their teammates in Majorca for pre season training.
If you’re a cycling enthusiast, why not head to this beautiful part of the island, and experience what it’s like to train as a pro. The mountains provide challenging long climbs, but the low traffic levels mean you can cycle safely. There are a number of suggested routes ranging from 40 to 100 miles that offer panoramic views and encompass climbs, rolling hills and flat terrain.
If you love the freedom of the bicycle, but would prefer a steadier, more relaxed experience, there are many simple and flat routes in the Pollença and Alcúdia areas. The route from Alcúdia to Peurto de Pollença and back again is mainly flat and offers stunning sea views of the bay. Most resorts have bicycle hire facilities, with children’s bikes and helmets available.
If cycling in the Tramuntana Mountains, take care in the road tunnels as some are not lit and you will need your own light. Also, try to avoid cycling in the hottest part of the day and always wear sunscreen and carry water.
Scooter
There could be nothing more romantic than cruising across the Majorcan landscape on your very own Vespa. Hiring a scooter or moped is the perfect way for singles, couples or friends to explore the island privately and in their own time. Take a map and set off, discovering quaint villages and secluded coves. A nostalgic scooter ride is also a far more relaxing process than cycling!
In northern Majorca is the gorgeous cove and natural gorge of Sa Calobra, which is easily reached by scooter. The route is a thrilling example of the meandering roads of the mountains, and is known as ‘the snake’. A swim in the crystal waters of Sa Calobra is the cherry on the cake after a scooter ride through the stunning mountain scenery.
A suggested route in eastern Majorca is to the monastery at San Salvador. Sat atop a peak in this smaller mountain range, the Serra de Llevant, the monastery offers unbeatable panoramic views of the surrounding landscape
There are many companies offering scooter hire in Majorca, and you are usually provided with a lock, helmets, insurance and a map. Remember, it is illegal to ride a scooter in Majorca without a helmet, and your scooter must be 125cc to take it on the motorway.
Segway
If you like your mode of transport a little more futuristic, take a Segway to explore the Majorcan capital Palma. Great for families, the Segway is fun and easy to ride – don’t be surprised if fearless children get the hang of the Segway quicker than you! Computers and motors keep the Segway upright while you stand on the base. Using the handlebars to steer, you lean forward to advance, and backwards to reverse. It only takes 10 minutes to master, leaving you plenty of time to whiz around the city and see the sights. The Segway is environmentally friendly and makes nearly no noise, so is perfect for eco-conscious travelers.
Various companies in Palma offer Segway tours, and take you around the beautiful old town via winding back streets, discovering secluded patios along the way. You can even take a Segway tour along the beachside resorts. With a gentle breeze in your hair as you glide through the city, the Segway is ideal for sight seeing comfortably in the Mediterranean heat.
