Dubai has never been the sort of city to be left behind. Its development, which has been meteoric in its pace, shows no sign of decelerating anytime soon, as evidenced by the rapid rise of the vertiginous Jumeirah Lake Towers. As you would expect from a cosmopolitan city with such lofty ambitions, there has been a great deal of investment to attract some of the world’s leading sports events to Dubai. Here’s a look at three of the most prestigious.
Golf in Dubai
Blessed with an abundance of immaculate golf courses, the verdant fairways of Dubai are amongst the most popular for keen amateur golfers from the US and across the world. Dubai golf courses are maintained to such a high standard that many have to be seen to be believed. To boost the prestige of golf in the city, Dubai has spared no expense in attracting many of the world’s top players to the Jumeirah Golf Estates, where they will try to emulate 2012 winner Rory McIlroy and drive, chip and putt their way to the DP World Tour Championship.
For amateur golfers the options are endless. Dubai golf courses are sprinkled generously around the city and punctuate the towering cityscape. Just a few of the courses you may wish to pay a visit include Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Creek and Yacht Club, Hatta Fort Golf Course and The Resort Course at Jebel Ali. If you’re thinking about playing golf in Dubai, you may have just found your own personal utopia!
Dubai Rugby Sevens
For record-breaking crowds, entertainment and scintillating on pitch action, it’s difficult to beat the Dubai Rugby Sevens. As always, the sevens game is played at a breathless pace which ensures there is never a dull moment. The Dubai leg of the World Sevens Tour boasts six pitches which welcome 120,000 fans over the three days of the tournament.
Along with the searing atmosphere of the men’s and women’s Sevens Tournaments, there are also a range of invitation-only competitions including veterans, youth teams and local social clubs, which further enhance the magic of the event.
The Dubai World Cup
The highlight of the Dubai Racing Season is undoubtedly the flagship Dubai World Cup, which welcomes the world’s best horses and jockeys from around the world. With a prize purse of an estimated US$10 million, it‘s hardly surprising that the great and the good of the horse racing world flock to the Dubai World Cup Carnival with the aim of being under starter’s orders come Super Saturday. Held at the Meydan Racecourse, this spectacular sporting arena can accommodate 60,000 spectators in a one mile long grandstand, and perhaps unsurprisingly for Dubai, the Meydan also boasts its very own golf course.
My Dubai Stay offers a varied, affordable and comfortable range of accommodation in Dubai, from one bed apartments for romantic getaways to larger accommodation situated next to some of the prestigious Dubai golf courses.
