Top 5 Road Trip Essentials
America is the land of the free and home of the brave and American diners, as well as 75,932 km of Interstate Highway just waiting to be explored.
A road trip is the perfect way to see America as its vastness and multitude of exciting things to see is hard to experience from the air. Getting in a classic Mustang and driving along Route 66 listening to Elvis, is the stereotypical American Dream.
But it’s important to be prepared and knowing a few useful tips will help make your road trip as smooth as possible and not leave you wishing you were on that plane, sipping Ginger Ale at 28,000 feet. So here is a list of the Top 5 most essential tips for your driving holiday.
1. First Aid Kit
This might seem obvious, but not many people may think of this, the American healthcare system works a lot differently to the rest of Europe. It’s important to be prepared for any minor accidents that can be easily solved with a quick plaster or some antiseptic cream. They are relatively inexpensive and can be found in pharmacies and supermarkets, make sure they have a sufficient amount of supplies to last the length of your journey as you want to be as prepared as possible.
This may be a tricky one if you are travelling as a large group with varied music tastes so it may be a good idea to create a playlist with tunes from everyone’s music collections. Do the same if you are travelling as a couple and bring twice as many songs as you think you will need. It’s also a cool idea to get an mp3 player adapter for the car so that you can play your songs as well as the radio to mix it up a bit.
3. Food and Drink (and gas)
America’s roads are tricky buggers as there are often huge gaps between gas stations and therefore it’s hard to know when you can next stop for provisions (and peeing). The best thing to do is to make sure that before you start your journey you buy plenty of food and drinks; snacks that are re-sealable and nutritious are the best things you can get. Also be sure to fill up your car’s tank too at regular intervals, don’t wait until you get down to the last half and it’s another 500 miles for the next service station
4. Versatile Clothing
Sitting down for miles and miles of road is pretty challenging although it is made so much easier if you have comfortable and breathable clothes on. Layers are also important, as if you are driving through America there is a variety of climates from North to South. Flip flops are also a great shoe for travelling in as they are easy to take on and off. When you are in the car you don’t really want to wear shoes, although when driving trainers might be better depending on your preferences.
5. Enjoy yourself!
Having a positive outlook of the trip and being with someone that you either love or care about a lot as there will be times when you are tested. It’s important that you can just be yourself and have fun on your amazing American experience!
