The City of Golden Friendship

Find Out Why Cagayan de Oro Is Quickly Becoming One of the Philippines’ Major Tourist Destinations

When you think about where to go while visiting the Philippines, probably Manila, and maybe Cebu, pop into mind. However, unbeknownst to most tourists, there are many more amazing places to travel while in the Phillipines and the City of Cagayan de Oro is one of those places that has a lot to offer.

Cagayan de Oro is known as the City of Golden Friendship, and the Kagayanons certainly make sure that their city lives up to this name. While Filipinos in general are usually quite friendly, the more relaxed pace of life in Cagayan de Oro definitely makes for friendlier happier inhabitants. This is also why Kagayanon tour guides are some of the best rated guides in terms of friendliness as well as professionalism.

So, where does one go when in CdeO?

The options really are endless. If you are a shopper (and who isn’t?) Cagayan has a lot of unique places to buy “Pasalubong”, which is Filipino for “Gifts for friends back home who didn’t get to go on the trip but would appreciate a memento of a different culture” (very loose translation). One of the most fun places to shop while in Cagayan is the “Night Café”. This is a combination of an outdoor shopping bazaar and food tents where you can eat and drink icy cold beer on a warm night. You can also try a taste of one of Mindanao’s most “interesting” fruits: durian. This strong smelling and odd looking fruit is a favorite with Kagayanons and is even purported to be a strong aphrodisiac for women as well as men. Night Café only opens on Friday and Saturday nights, because they close down the streets around the town’s main square to make way for the shops and tents.

If you are more interested in relaxing than bargaining, you can visit one of Cagayan de Oro’s beautiful beach resorts or take in the beauty of its nature reserves like Malasag Gardens and the Eco-Tourism Village. Mapawa Nature Park and Macahambus Cave also mix natural beauty with a bit of adventure.

But, if you are looking for some REAL adventure you definitely have to try CdoO’s white water river rafting. The Cagayan de Oro River is the perfect mix of calm spots where you can swim in the nice cool water, and rushing currents where you can skillfully navigate your raft through the rapids or just leave that to the river guides and hang on for dear life (whatever floats your boat… really!)

And, if river rafting wasn’t scary enough for you, how about taking a flight down Asia’s longest dual zipline in Dahilayan Adventure Park? This is probably the closest you will ever get to feeling like you’re really flying besides in your flying-dreams. There is also a shorter zipline that parents can take their children on (because kids just love being zipped through the air at crazy heights!) and other attractions like ATV and horse rides and a Zorbit which is like a giant padded human sized hamster ball that you can roll down hills in (and… I want one for Christmas….)

These are just a few of the great things that Cagayan de Oro has to offer her visitors. If you are planning a trip across the Philippines, you’d be making a big mistake if you didn’t stop by CdeO for a visit!
