The 5 Best Swimming Spots in New York City

New York CityWhether you swim for exercise, for fun, or for a way to relax at the end of a hard day, there are a lot of options all over New York City. It doesn’t take long to find the perfect pool for a family outing, an outdoor swimming adventure or a quiet place for swimming lessons. NYC offers everything from rooftop hotel pools to quiet swimming holes hidden away from the crowded city. Which one is right for you? There following are five of the best choices that can accommodate a wide range of preferences.

Hamilton Fish Recreation Center

On the Lower East Side, on Pitts and Houston streets, Hamilton Fish offers a lot of fun opportunities for the whole family. This public recreation center offers two pools – one is Olympic-sized for the adults and one is a wading pool for the small kids who may still be in swimming lessons. It can be hard to find pools that are made just for the kids, but Hamilton Fish offers a big, clean place to take the whole family.

The Empire Hotel Pool

Are you looking for a more luxurious experience? The rooftop plunge pool at the Empire Hotel is just the place. It has a two-level pool area with a patio and retractable roof – which means it can be available for swimming independent of the weather. The Empire also offers some private cabana rentals that have flat screen TVs, iPod docking stations and speakers, daybeds, and mini refrigerators. This pool has everything you need to have a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Stony Clove Stream

Have you ever gone swimming in a completely natural swimming hole? State Route 214 follows the Stony Clove Stream all the way to Phoenicia, with the most popular place to play in the natural waters about one mile north of there in Chichester. This stream has a lot of opportunities to enjoy the rushing waters while resting on large boulders along the way. Remember though, there aren’t exactly any lifeguards at swimming holes like this, so always exercise caution.

John Jay Park & Pool

John Jay is located on FDR Drive between 76 and 78th Streets. This is an extremely popular option set in the middle of Manhattan. Over the years it has easily become one of the most popular pools in the city because it is clean, safe, and most of all fun. It includes a snack bar and a river-themed playground where kids can play in sprinklers and fountains. For the bigger kids and adults, it might be important to note that this is one of the few public pools that will allow diving in certain places.

Colgate Lake

One of the best lakes for swimming in upstate NY, Colgate Lake is just a little ways from Woodstock in East Jewett. The reason it is so conducive to swimming is that it is completely man-made, which means there’s no pond scum or weedy undergrowth to contend with. It’s a great place for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and, of course, swimming. There’s even a shallow area that is great for children.

Obviously this is just scratching the surface of all the options for swimming in NYC, but if you are looking for something a little different, or someplace safe and clean that the whole family can enjoy, these popular swimming holes are a great place to start.
