How to Explore Hongkong without Having to Learn Chinese
If you have travelled to Asia then you know how hard it can be to get around on your own. Being alone in a foreign country where you don’t know the language can be challenging. But what if you want to visit, let’s say, Hongkong on your own? You want to explore the country and really experience the culture. But there is just one problem. Most people in Hongkong don’t speak English. They converse in Chinese. How can you ask for directions if you can’t understand the people you are talking to?
This is a real dilemma. I should know. I’ve been there. 3 years ago my mom and I went to Hongkong on vacation. We took an hour trying to direct the taxi driver towards our hotel. It was very frustrating. Not to mention a real time waster. If you are thinking of vacationing to Hongkong or any other foreign country where you don’t know the language, here are three tips to help you get around.
Tip no. 1: Plan your vacation. Prior to getting on that plane decide first where you plan to go and what places you want to see. This will not only give you direction this will save you time. And as a result, you will be able to maximize your vacation. The biggest time waster is indecision. So take that out the equation. Plan your route carefully.
Tip no. 2: Bring a map. With a map, you’ll never be truly lost. Even if you don’t know how to speak Chinese at least you can show the person you are asking where you want to go. A map is a useful tool for getting around. You don’t have to bring a real map. If you have a smart phone you can use google earth or wikimaps. If your phone has a GPS system, then that’s even better.
Tip no. 3: Learn the transportation ropes. Before visiting a foreign country do a bit of research. Find out how people there get around. What means of transportation do they use? What’s the fastest way to get around? Each country is different. In Hongkong, the fastest way of travelling is through the subway. You’ll get where you want to go in a few minutes.
They say that preparation is the key to success. And this holds true even when you are on vacation. If you prepare in advance then you can eliminate potential problems and concentrate on having fun on your vacation.
